PORTRAIT
OF SCHUYLER VAN VECHTEN HOFFMAN V A great-great... grandson of Martin Hoffman, one of the founding fathers of New Amsterdam (New York) in the 1600s, Schuyler is painted surrounded by the open beauty of San Diegos Balboa Park. The portrait shows Schuyler (Sky-ler) in the casual dress of California, combined with the formal overcoat of his great-grandfather Schuyler V. V. Hoffman Jr., a founder of the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City. A strong-willed and generous individual, Schuyler takes the casual but assured stance of the young men of today. Rushing portrays well both this and the connection of Schuylers western and eastern heritages. Given as a gift to his mother, Schuyler chose Andre Rushing to paint this portrait because he felt the style was similar to that of his great-great-uncle John Singer Sargent. |
